Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biologic therapy prepared by concentrating platelets from a patient's own peripheral blood. In a clinical trial conducted by Istanbul University, PRP is being evaluated for the treatment of lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) in comparison to glucocorticoids (betamethasone) and saline. The therapeutic effect of PRP is mediated by the release of various growth factors and cytokines from platelet alpha-granules upon activation, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These factors bind to their respective receptors on target cells, stimulating chemotaxis, cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and extracellular matrix synthesis, which collectively promote the repair and regeneration of damaged tendon tissue.
