Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) developed by the Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli is a biologic treatment derived from a patient's own peripheral blood through a specific double-centrifugation process. This process concentrates platelets to several times their baseline levels, which, upon intra-articular injection, release a variety of growth factors and signaling molecules, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These factors work synergistically to modulate the inflammatory environment within the knee joint, stimulate chondrocyte metabolism, and promote the repair of articular cartilage. It is primarily investigated for the treatment of degenerative knee pathologies such as osteoarthritis and chondropathy to improve functional outcomes and reduce pain compared to standard treatments like hyaluronic acid.
