Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrated preparation of platelets derived from a patient's own peripheral blood through centrifugation. Developed for the treatment of chronic non-healing cutaneous ulcers—such as diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, and pressure ulcers—PRP functions by delivering a high concentration of bioactive proteins and growth factors directly to the wound bed. Upon activation, platelets release factors including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which collectively stimulate angiogenesis, fibroblast recruitment, and extracellular matrix synthesis. This therapeutic approach aims to jumpstart the healing process in chronic wounds by promoting granulation tissue formation and re-epithelialization.
