Overview

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biological product derived from a patient's own blood, characterized by a platelet concentration significantly higher than baseline. In the context of clinical research conducted by Recep Tayyip Erdogan University, PRP is being investigated for its therapeutic potential in managing postoperative outcomes following the surgical extraction of impacted mandibular third molars. The preparation contains a concentrated milieu of growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which are released upon platelet activation. These factors promote tissue repair, angiogenesis, and modulate the inflammatory response. In this specific application, PRP is administered via submucosal injection around the extraction site to evaluate its efficacy in reducing postoperative pain, facial swelling, and the incidence of alveolar osteitis (dry socket).
