Overview

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an investigational autologous biologic therapy developed by researchers at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia for the treatment of severe dry eye syndrome, particularly in patients with Sjögren's syndrome. The treatment involves the subconjunctival injection of concentrated platelets, derived from the patient's own peripheral blood, into the area surrounding the lacrimal gland. These platelets release a variety of bioactive proteins, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and epidermal growth factor (EGF), which facilitate lacrimal gland regeneration and ocular surface epithelial repair. By modulating the inflammatory environment and promoting cellular restoration, PRP aims to improve tear production and alleviate the symptoms of chronic ocular surface disease.
