Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biologic therapy derived from a patient's own blood, concentrated to contain a high density of platelets. When activated, these platelets release a variety of growth factors and cytokines—including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)—from their alpha-granules. In the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, PRP is injected intra-articularly to modulate the intra-articular environment, reduce inflammation, and potentially stimulate cartilage repair and chondrocyte activity. This specific application is being studied by Universitas Sriwijaya in a comparative trial against umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell secretome and hyaluronic acid.
