This investigational autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is being developed by the University of São Paulo for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. The therapy utilizes a specific leukocyte-poor, non-activated preparation derived from the patient's own blood through a double centrifugation process, achieving a concentration of approximately 1 million platelets/mm³. Administered via ultrasound-guided intra-articular injection, the treatment aims to deliver a high concentration of growth factors and bioactive molecules directly into the knee joint. These biological components are intended to modulate the intra-articular environment, reduce inflammation, and potentially promote tissue regeneration in osteoarthritic joints. The therapy was evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (NCT03138317) at the Hospital das Clinicas Rheumatology Department.
