Overview

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biological therapy being investigated by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) for the treatment of acute muscle injuries, specifically in professional football players. The therapy involves concentrating a patient's own platelets, which, upon activation, release a variety of growth factors and bioactive molecules (such as PDGF, TGF-β, and VEGF) that facilitate muscle tissue regeneration and repair. In the clinical trial NCT03676205, the PRP is prepared using the Ortho pras® system and administered via ultrasound-guided intramuscular injections. The study aims to evaluate whether PRP reduces the time to return to play and decreases injury recurrence compared to homeopathic treatments.
