Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) combined with hyaluronic acid (HA) is an autologous biologic combination therapy investigated for the treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) internal derangement. PRP is prepared from the patient's own peripheral blood and contains a high concentration of platelets that, upon activation, release essential growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These factors promote tissue regeneration, angiogenesis, and modulate the inflammatory response within the joint. Hyaluronic acid, a natural component of synovial fluid, provides viscosupplementation, improving joint lubrication and reducing mechanical friction. This specific combination is being evaluated by Mansoura University in clinical trials to compare its efficacy against other intra-articular injections like Tenoxicam.
