Platelet-rich plasma + microfragmented adipose tissue is an autologous combination therapy being investigated for the treatment of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrate of autologous blood containing high levels of platelets, which release various growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) to stimulate tissue repair and modulate inflammation. Microfragmented adipose tissue (MFAT) is obtained by mechanically processing lipoaspirate to preserve the structural integrity of the adipose tissue's vascular-stromal niche, which is rich in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and pericytes. The combination of PRP and MFAT is hypothesized to provide a synergistic effect, where PRP offers an immediate bioactive environment of growth factors and MFAT provides a long-lasting cellular scaffold and regenerative potential. This therapy is typically administered via intra-articular injection to improve joint function and alleviate pain in patients with degenerative joint diseases.
