Overview

Platelet-rich plasma + minoxidil is a combination therapy being investigated by Indonesia University for the treatment of male androgenetic alopecia. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous preparation of concentrated platelets that, upon activation, releases various growth factors including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β). These factors stimulate the proliferation of dermal papilla cells and enhance local vascularization. Minoxidil, a small molecule vasodilator, acts as an ATP-sensitive potassium channel opener, which is thought to widen blood vessels and open potassium channels, allowing more oxygen, blood, and nutrients to reach the hair follicles. The combination aims to provide synergistic effects by combining the regenerative properties of PRP with the established hair-growth-promoting effects of topical minoxidil.
