Overview

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) combined with silymarin is an experimental combination therapy being evaluated by Sohag University for the treatment of melasma. PRP is an autologous concentration of human platelets in a small volume of plasma, containing various growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) that promote skin rejuvenation and may influence melanocyte activity. Silymarin, a polyphenolic flavonoid extracted from milk thistle (Silybum marianum), possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to inhibit tyrosinase, the rate-limiting enzyme in melanin synthesis. The combination aims to leverage the regenerative effects of PRP and the anti-melanogenic effects of silymarin to reduce hyperpigmentation in patients with melasma.
