Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) lysate is an autologous or allogeneic biological preparation derived from platelet-rich plasma that has been subjected to a lysis process, such as freeze-thaw cycles, to release the intracellular and alpha-granule contents of platelets. This process results in a concentrated mixture of growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Unlike standard PRP, the lysate form provides pre-released growth factors for immediate tissue interaction without requiring thrombin activation or intact platelets. It is currently being investigated as an intralesional injection for the treatment of partial-thickness rotator cuff tears, where it aims to stimulate tendon fibroblasts and local tissue cells to promote repair and regeneration.
