Overview

Platycodin D is a **triterpene saponin** isolated primarily from the root of *Platycodon grandiflorum* (commonly known as balloon flower). It is a bioactive natural compound with demonstrated multiple pharmacological effects, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and immunoregulatory properties. Platycodin D exhibits **anticancer** effects in various cell lines by *inducing apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, and autophagy* and by inhibiting angiogenesis, invasion, and metastasis[1][3][4][7]. Mechanistically, it modulates several cell signaling pathways relevant to cancer biology, such as upregulating the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, activating caspase-3, promoting ubiquitin-proteasome-dependent c-Myc degradation, and downregulating the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway as well as redistributing membrane cholesterol and interfering with viral entry in the case of SARS-CoV-2[1][3][4][6]. Platycodin D is used primarily in preclinical research and is not currently an approved pharmaceutical drug for any indication.
