Platycodon grandiflorum is a perennial herb native to East Asia and widely used in traditional Chinese, Korean, and Japanese medicine. The root (Platycodonis Radix) is the primary medicinal part and contains bioactive compounds such as triterpenoid saponins (notably platycodins), flavonoids, phenolic acids, sterols, polysaccharides, amino acids, fatty acids (notably linoleic acid), vitamins, and trace elements[1][2][5]. Traditionally used for respiratory ailments—including coughs with phlegm, sore throat, bronchitis, pleurisy—and for conditions like chest congestion and lung abscesses[1][4][6][7]. It also has applications in treating hypertension and diabetes in Korea[7][8].
