Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Platycodon grandiflorum extract is derived from the roots of Platycodon grandiflorum, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb and food ingredient. The extract contains bioactive compounds such as saponins (notably platycodin D), flavonoids, phenolic acids, sterols, and polysaccharides, which contribute to its pharmacological effects. Its primary mechanisms include anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antitumor, immune modulation, cough suppression, expectorant, antiasthmatic, and skin-whitening actions. Platycodin D is considered the main active compound responsible for many of these effects. The extract inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β), inducible nitric oxide synthase, and the activity of tyrosinase, impacting melanin production and thus skin pigmentation. It is used both as a cosmetic ingredient (whitening agent, antioxidant), food product, and traditional medicine for respiratory diseases, chronic inflammation, and related indications[1][2][3][5].
