Overview

Plenamine is a sterile, nonpyrogenic 15% solution of essential and non-essential amino acids used for parenteral nutrition to provide a source of nitrogen for protein synthesis. In a clinical study led by Boston Medical Center, it was evaluated as an early supplemental intravenous protein source alongside enteral feeding for patients with traumatic injuries. The intervention aims to improve nitrogen balance and support the metabolic demands of the inflammatory response post-injury, potentially altering the metabolomic profile of critically ill patients in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU). By providing a concentrated source of protein (approximately 1.5-2.0 g/kg/day), it aims to mitigate the catabolic state typically seen in critically ill trauma patients.
