Overview

Plerixafor is a small molecule hematopoietic stem cell mobilizer used in combination with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) to mobilize hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) from the bone marrow into the peripheral blood for collection and subsequent autologous transplantation. It is primarily indicated for patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or multiple myeloma who are undergoing autologous stem cell transplant. Plerixafor acts as an antagonist of the C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4), blocking its interaction with stromal cell-derived factor-1α (SDF-1α), which disrupts the retention of HSCs in the bone marrow, thereby increasing their release into circulation[1][2][3][4].
