This is an investigational topical delivery system consisting of biodegradable and biocompatible polymeric nanoparticles, specifically composed of poly(l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA). Developed by the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Besançon in collaboration with the Université de Franche-Comté, these nanoparticles are approximately 70-100 nm in size and are labeled with a fluorochrome (such as fluoresceinamine or fluorescein sodium) to facilitate tracking. The system does not contain a traditional active pharmaceutical ingredient and was designed as a proof-of-concept platform to study cutaneous penetration. In the MicroIskin clinical trial (EudraCT: 2013-000318-39), the nanoparticles demonstrated a unique ability to selectively accumulate in the inflamed lesions and pilosebaceous follicles of patients with atopic dermatitis while showing minimal penetration into healthy skin, highlighting their potential as targeted carriers for future anti-inflammatory therapies.
