Overview

PLP178-191 is a research peptide corresponding to amino acids 178 to 191 of the myelin proteolipid protein (PLP). It is an immunodominant encephalitogenic epitope used extensively in preclinical research, particularly in mouse models of autoimmune demyelinating disease such as experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), which serves as a model for multiple sclerosis. The peptide targets the immune system's T cell response to myelin antigens; specifically, PLP178-191-specific CD8 T cells have been shown to possess disease-suppressive properties in EAE models. It is a peptide (biologic/peptide modality) and is strictly a research-use-only (RUO) compound with no identified pharmaceutical company developing it as a therapeutic drug, and it is not approved for clinical use. It is commercially available from reagent suppliers such as Eurogentec and Biosynth for laboratory research purposes.
