Overview

Plumula nelumbinis is the green embryo of the mature seeds of the lotus plant (*Nelumbo nucifera* Gaertn). It is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and functional food, commonly consumed as a tea or dietary supplement. The extract is rich in bioactive compounds, particularly bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids such as liensinine, neferine, and isoliensinine, as well as flavonoids like schaftoside and rhoifolin. Research indicates that Plumula nelumbinis possesses a wide range of pharmacological activities, including cardiovascular protection (antihypertensive and anti-remodeling effects), anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-tumor properties. It has been investigated for its potential in treating vascular diseases, sepsis-induced liver injury, atopic dermatitis, and various cancers (such as non-small cell lung cancer and pancreatic cancer) by modulating signaling pathways like Nrf2/HO-1, MAPK/NF-κB, and AKT/mTOR. Notably, it contains higenamine, a substance prohibited in sports by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
