Pluronic cream refers to a topical pharmaceutical base or vehicle primarily composed of Pluronic F127 (also known as poloxamer 407), a non-ionic triblock copolymer. It is used in compounding pharmacies as a transdermal and topical delivery system for various active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Pluronic gels are available in concentrations such as 20% and 30%, forming clear gels at room temperature that liquefy when refrigerated. The mechanism of action is not pharmacological but rather physicochemical—Pluronic F127 forms micelles and thermoreversible gels that can encapsulate both hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs, enhancing their solubility and facilitating their passage through the skin barrier. When combined with lecithin organogel (to form PLO), it further improves drug absorption by temporarily disrupting the stratum corneum to increase permeability without causing significant skin damage[1][2][3][8]. Pluronic cream itself does not have intrinsic therapeutic activity; its role is as an excipient or delivery vehicle.
