Overview

PLX (PLacental eXpanded) cells are a proprietary platform of allogeneic, placenta-derived, mesenchymal-like adherent stromal cells developed by Pluri (formerly Pluristem Therapeutics). These cells are expanded in a three-dimensional (3D) bioreactor system that simulates a natural physiological environment, allowing for large-scale production without losing therapeutic potency. PLX cells operate via a paracrine mechanism; upon administration, they respond to signals from the patient's body—such as inflammation or ischemia—by secreting a tailored cocktail of therapeutic proteins, including cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors. These secreted factors promote tissue repair, stimulate angiogenesis, and modulate the immune system. The platform includes distinct products such as PLX-PAD, primarily investigated for cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases like critical limb ischemia and osteoarthritis, and PLX-R18, designed to support hematopoietic recovery following radiation exposure or bone marrow failure.
