Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PMS Escape is an oral dietary supplement beverage formulated as a specific blend of simple and complex carbohydrates with added vitamins and minerals to alleviate psychological symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, including tension, irritability, sadness, anger, fatigue, and carbohydrate cravings. Clinical trials led by Judith Wurtman at MIT demonstrated that this patented carbohydrate mixture increases the plasma tryptophan-to-large neutral amino acid ratio by around 29%, thereby enhancing brain tryptophan availability and serotonin synthesis, which is thought to underlie its benefits on mood and appetite in women with PMS.[1][9][11] The product also contains vitamin B6, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, and other nutrients selected to support serotonin production and correct micronutrient abnormalities associated with PMS, and is marketed as a non‑prescription, food-based option for management of premenstrual symptoms.[1][11][13][5]
