Pneucolin is an intranasal COVID-19 vaccine that utilizes a live-attenuated influenza virus (LAIV) vector to deliver the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Developed through a collaboration between Xiamen University, the University of Hong Kong, and Beijing Wantai Biological Pharmacy Enterprise, the vaccine is designed to elicit mucosal immunity in the respiratory tract, alongside systemic humoral and cellular immune responses. The vector is a delNS1 (NS1-deleted) influenza virus, which is replication-deficient in normal cells but capable of expressing the recombinant SARS-CoV-2 RBD gene. Pneucolin has received Emergency Use Authorization in China for use as a booster, particularly in adults with hybrid immunity, and is administered via a nasal spray to mimic the natural route of infection.
