pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine

Pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine (diphtheria CRM197 protein), marketed as **Prevnar 13** (or **Prevenar 13**), is a sterile suspension of saccharides derived from the capsular antigens of 13 *Streptococcus pneumoniae* serotypes (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, and 23F). Each serotype is individually conjugated to the non-toxic diphtheria CRM197 carrier protein via reductive amination. Developed by Pfizer, the vaccine is designed to stimulate active immunization against invasive disease, pneumonia, and otitis media caused by these specific serotypes. The conjugation to CRM197 induces a T-cell dependent immune response, which is more effective than the T-cell independent response elicited by plain polysaccharide vaccines, particularly in young children and older adults.
