pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine

Pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine (PCV13) is a biologic vaccine developed by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (a subsidiary of Pfizer) and marketed under the brand name Prevenar 13 or Prevnar 13. It consists of purified capsular polysaccharides from 13 serotypes of *Streptococcus pneumoniae* (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, and 23F), each individually conjugated to a non-toxic diphtheria carrier protein (CRM197). The vaccine stimulates active immunity by inducing the production of serotype-specific antibodies and memory B cells through a T-cell dependent immune response. It is indicated for the prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease, pneumonia, and acute otitis media in infants, children, and adults. PCV13 has also been extensively studied for its immunomodulatory effects and clinical efficacy in high-risk populations, including patients with bronchial asthma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), sickle cell disease, and those undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
