Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine is a biologic vaccine used for active immunization to prevent invasive disease and pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. It targets thirteen specific serotypes of the bacterium (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F and 23F). The mechanism of action involves stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against these serotypes through a protein-polysaccharide conjugation approach. The primary indication is prevention of serious infections such as meningitis and bacteremia in both children (from six weeks old) and adults. Pfizer developed the original version (Prevnar/Prevnar 13), with other versions developed by companies like Walvax Biotechnology[1][3][5][6][7].
