pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine (Pfizer, 040cee)

The 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13), marketed as Prevnar 13, is a sterile suspension of saccharides from the capsular antigens of 13 *Streptococcus pneumoniae* serotypes (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, and 23F). Each serotype is individually conjugated to a non-toxic diphtheria CRM197 carrier protein. Developed by Wyeth (a subsidiary of Pfizer), it is indicated for active immunization to prevent invasive disease, pneumonia, and otitis media caused by the included serotypes. The vaccine works by inducing a T-cell dependent immune response, which leads to the production of high-affinity antibodies and immunological memory against the targeted pneumococcal serotypes. It was first licensed by the FDA in 2010 for pediatric use and expanded to adults in 2011.
