Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pneumococcal 20-valent conjugate vaccine (PCV20), marketed under the brand names Prevnar 20 and Prevenar 20 (formerly Apexxnar), is an active immunizing agent developed by Pfizer. It is a sterile suspension containing purified capsular polysaccharides from 20 distinct serotypes of *Streptococcus pneumoniae* (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 8, 9V, 10A, 11A, 12F, 14, 15B, 18C, 19A, 19F, 22F, 23F, and 33F). Each polysaccharide is individually conjugated to a non-toxic diphtheria CRM197 carrier protein to enhance immunogenicity via T-cell dependent pathways. PCV20 is approved for the prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease, pneumonia, and acute otitis media in pediatric and adult populations. In clinical trials, PCV20 is frequently utilized as an active comparator (such as in 'Stage 2' infant cohorts) to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of next-generation pneumococcal vaccine candidates.
