Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) is a sterile solution of saccharides of the capsular antigens of *Streptococcus pneumoniae* serotypes 4, 6B, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F, and 23F, individually conjugated to the diphtheria CRM197 protein. Developed by Wyeth (now Pfizer), it was the first conjugate vaccine approved for the prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease in infants and young children. By conjugating the polysaccharide antigens to a protein carrier, the vaccine induces a T-cell dependent immune response, which is effective in children under two years of age, unlike plain polysaccharide vaccines. While highly effective in reducing the burden of vaccine-type pneumococcal disease, it has been largely superseded in many national immunization programs by higher-valency versions like PCV13 and PCV20.
