Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pneumococcal polysaccharide serotype 1 is a purified capsular polysaccharide antigen derived from *Streptococcus pneumoniae* serotype 1. This serotype is a major contributor to invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), including pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia, and is particularly prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. Developed as a vaccine candidate by Erasmus Universitair Medisch Centrum Rotterdam (Erasmus MC), the antigen is designed to stimulate the immune system to produce serotype-specific antibodies. Because serotype 1 is highly invasive and often associated with outbreaks in the African meningitis belt, it is a critical component of both polysaccharide and conjugate vaccine research. Erasmus MC's work in this area focuses on the structural characterization and immunogenicity of the serotype 1 polysaccharide to improve vaccine efficacy across diverse populations, including infants and the elderly.
