pneumococcal polysaccharide serotype 11A conjugate (CRM197) adsorbed on aluminium phosphate is an investigational monovalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) candidate developed by the Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM). It consists of the purified capsular polysaccharide of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 11A chemically conjugated to the CRM197 carrier protein, a non-toxic recombinant mutant of the diphtheria toxin. The conjugate is adsorbed onto an aluminium phosphate adjuvant to enhance its immunogenicity. This vaccine is designed to elicit a T-cell dependent immune response against serotype 11A, a serotype increasingly associated with invasive pneumococcal disease and antibiotic resistance that is not covered by earlier generation PCVs. The development of this specific conjugate is part of RIVM's broader efforts to expand serotype coverage in affordable pneumococcal vaccines for global health use.
