Pneumococcal polysaccharide serotype 17F is a purified capsular antigen derived from *Streptococcus pneumoniae*, utilized in vaccines to confer protection against invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) caused by this specific serotype. Serotype 17F is recognized as a significant pathogen in both pediatric and adult populations and is a component of the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) as well as newer conjugate vaccines like PCV15 (Vaxneuvance) and PCV20 (Prevnar 20). Erasmus Universitair Medisch Centrum Rotterdam (Erasmus MC) has played a pivotal role in advancing the science of this antigen, particularly through the development of synthetic oligosaccharide conjugates. These synthetic candidates are designed to improve the consistency and immunogenicity of the vaccine compared to traditional polysaccharide purification methods. The antigen works by stimulating B-cells to produce serotype-specific antibodies, which are essential for the opsonization and clearance of the bacteria by the host immune system.
