Pneumococcal polysaccharide serotype 18C is a specific capsular polysaccharide antigen derived from *Streptococcus pneumoniae* serotype 18C, used as a primary component in pneumococcal vaccines. Erasmus Universitair Medisch Centrum Rotterdam (Erasmus MC) has been a key developer in this field, particularly focusing on the characterization and synthetic production of this polysaccharide to improve vaccine precision. In modern vaccine development, this polysaccharide is often conjugated to a carrier protein (such as CRM197) to enhance its immunogenicity by inducing a T-cell dependent immune response, which is critical for providing long-term protection in infants and young children. The antigen stimulates the production of serotype-specific opsonizing antibodies that facilitate the clearance of the bacteria by the immune system, thereby preventing invasive pneumococcal diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia.
