Overview

Pneumococcal polysaccharide serotype 19A is a purified capsular polysaccharide derived from *Streptococcus pneumoniae* serotype 19A. In the context of development by Erasmus Universitair Medisch Centrum Rotterdam (Erasmus MC), it is typically formulated as a conjugate vaccine where the polysaccharide is chemically linked to a carrier protein (such as CRM197) to enhance immunogenicity, particularly in infants and the elderly. Serotype 19A became a major cause of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) following the introduction of earlier 7-valent vaccines that did not include it. The vaccine works by inducing B-cell and T-cell dependent immune responses, leading to the production of opsonophagocytic antibodies that protect against infection, pneumonia, and meningitis caused by this specific serotype.
