Overview

Pneumococcal polysaccharide serotype 19F-CRM197 conjugate adsorbed on aluminium phosphate is a specific vaccine component developed by the Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM) for the prevention of infections caused by *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. It consists of the capsular polysaccharide of serotype 19F covalently linked to CRM197, a non-toxic recombinant mutant of the diphtheria toxin that serves as a carrier protein. This conjugation is essential for converting the T-cell independent polysaccharide antigen into a T-cell dependent antigen, thereby inducing immunological memory and a robust immune response in infants and young children. The conjugate is adsorbed onto an aluminium phosphate adjuvant to enhance its immunogenicity. While it is a distinct chemical entity, it is primarily utilized as one of the active constituents in multivalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs), such as the 10-valent formulation (PCV10) licensed by RIVM to the Serum Institute of India.
