Pneumococcal polysaccharide serotype 2 refers to the specific capsular polysaccharide antigen derived from *Streptococcus pneumoniae* serotype 2. Developed as a vaccine candidate by Erasmus Universitair Medisch Centrum Rotterdam (Erasmus MC), it aims to provide targeted immunity against this specific serotype, which is historically significant and continues to cause invasive pneumococcal disease in certain geographic regions, such as Papua New Guinea. Despite its clinical relevance, serotype 2 is notably absent from widely used pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) like PCV13 and PCV15, although it is included in the 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23). Erasmus MC's research focuses on evaluating the immunogenicity of this serotype and developing protein-polysaccharide conjugate formulations to enhance the immune response in vulnerable populations, such as infants and the elderly, who typically respond poorly to plain polysaccharide antigens.
