Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pneumococcal polysaccharide serotype 22F is a purified capsular polysaccharide antigen derived from Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 22F. Developed by Erasmus Universitair Medisch Centrum Rotterdam (Erasmus MC), this biological entity is designed to elicit a protective immune response against one of the most common serotypes associated with serotype replacement following the introduction of earlier pneumococcal conjugate vaccines. The polysaccharide acts as an immunogen, stimulating the production of opsonophagocytic antibodies that facilitate the clearance of the bacteria by the immune system. While it can be used as a standalone polysaccharide vaccine, it is primarily researched for its potential as a component in next-generation conjugate vaccines to provide broader coverage against invasive pneumococcal disease, including pneumonia and meningitis.
