Overview

pneumococcal polysaccharide serotype 22F conjugated to CRM197 adsorbed on aluminium phosphate is a monovalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) candidate developed by the Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM). It is designed to provide protection against Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 22F, a serotype increasingly associated with invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) following the introduction of lower-valency vaccines. The vaccine utilizes the CRM197 carrier protein, a non-toxic mutant of diphtheria toxin, to convert the T-cell independent polysaccharide antigen into a T-cell dependent form, thereby inducing immunological memory and higher antibody titers, particularly in infants and young children. The formulation is adsorbed on aluminium phosphate, which acts as an adjuvant to enhance the immune response. This candidate is part of RIVM's efforts to develop and transfer vaccine technology to improve global access to expanded-spectrum pneumococcal vaccines.
