Overview

This is a monovalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine candidate or component developed by the Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM). It consists of the capsular polysaccharide of *Streptococcus pneumoniae* serotype 6B covalently linked to the CRM197 carrier protein (a non-toxic mutant of diphtheria toxin) and adsorbed onto an aluminium phosphate adjuvant. The conjugation to CRM197 transforms the polysaccharide from a T-cell independent to a T-cell dependent antigen, which is crucial for inducing a robust immune response and immunological memory in infants and young children. This specific conjugate was developed as part of RIVM's efforts to create affordable pneumococcal vaccines for global health, often serving as a precursor or component for multivalent formulations like PCV10. The technology for this vaccine was notably transferred to the Serum Institute of India for the production of multivalent vaccines.
