Pneumococcal polysaccharide serotype 7F is a purified capsular antigen derived from *Streptococcus pneumoniae* serotype 7F, a highly invasive strain associated with severe invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), including pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia. This polysaccharide serves as a critical component in various vaccine formulations. In its unconjugated form, it is included in the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23), where it induces a B-cell mediated immune response. In conjugate vaccines such as PCV13, PCV15, and PCV20, the 7F polysaccharide is covalently linked to a carrier protein (like CRM197) to convert the immune response to a T-cell dependent pathway, which is essential for providing protection in infants and establishing long-term immunological memory. Erasmus Universitair Medisch Centrum Rotterdam (Erasmus MC) has been a key developer in characterizing the immunogenicity of this serotype and advancing novel vaccine strategies to combat pneumococcal infections.
