Overview

Pneumococcal polysaccharide serotype 9N is an investigational monovalent vaccine candidate consisting of the purified capsular polysaccharide from *Streptococcus pneumoniae* serotype 9N. Developed and primarily studied by the Erasmus University Medical Center (Erasmus MC), this antigen targets a specific serotype that is a significant cause of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) but is notably absent from widely used pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) such as PCV13. The vaccine functions by inducing a T-cell independent B-cell mediated immune response, leading to the production of serotype-specific opsonophagocytic antibodies that facilitate the clearance of the bacteria. Erasmus MC has utilized this specific polysaccharide in clinical research to evaluate immune competence in various patient populations, including those with chronic lymphocytic leukemia or splenectomized individuals, and to explore the potential for broader serotype coverage in future vaccine formulations.
