Overview

This drug is a monovalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine component consisting of the capsular polysaccharide of *Streptococcus pneumoniae* serotype 9V. The polysaccharide is covalently linked to CRM197, a non-toxic mutant of diphtheria toxin, which acts as a carrier protein to convert the T-cell independent polysaccharide antigen into a T-cell dependent antigen. This conjugation is essential for inducing a robust immune response and immunological memory, particularly in infants and young children. The conjugate is adsorbed onto an aluminium phosphate adjuvant to enhance the immune response. Developed by the Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM), this specific conjugate is a key component of multivalent pneumococcal vaccines (such as PCV10) designed for global health initiatives and technology transfer to manufacturers like the Serum Institute of India.
