pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine

The pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine developed by Watson Biotechnology (a subsidiary of Walvax Biotechnology) is a 23-valent vaccine approved for the prevention of pneumonia and invasive pneumococcal diseases caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is composed of purified capsular polysaccharides from 23 distinct serotypes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6B, 7F, 8, 9N, 9V, 10A, 11A, 12F, 14, 15B, 17F, 18C, 19A, 19F, 20, 22F, 23F, and 33F. The vaccine functions by inducing a T-cell independent immune response, leading to the production of type-specific opsonizing antibodies that facilitate the phagocytosis and clearance of the bacteria. It is primarily indicated for use in adults and children aged two years and older who are at increased risk of pneumococcal infection, providing broad coverage against the serotypes most frequently associated with serious disease.
