Overview

PNP-CBD is an experimental nanoparticle formulation of cannabidiol (CBD) encapsulated within protein nanoparticles. Developed by researchers at the University of Queensland, this formulation is designed to address the poor aqueous solubility and low bioavailability of CBD. The protein nanoparticle delivery system reportedly increases the water solubility of CBD by approximately 60-fold. PNP-CBD is being investigated for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), specifically ulcerative colitis. Its therapeutic effect is mediated through the targeting of Cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2) on macrophages, which suppresses their activation and the subsequent production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Preclinical studies in DSS-induced colitis models have shown that PNP-CBD significantly reduces disease severity, prevents colon shortening, and decreases inflammatory gene expression, outperforming unencapsulated CBD.
