PNU-142721 is a small molecule reverse transcriptase inhibitor that was developed for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It belongs to the class of organic compounds known as furo[2,3-c]pyridines and features a pyrimidine ring with a chloro substituent and a thioether linkage to a furo[2,3-c]pyridine moiety. The compound acts by inhibiting HIV reverse transcriptase, thereby blocking viral replication. Additionally, it has been shown to be an efficacious agonist of the human pregnane X receptor (PXR), which may influence drug metabolism pathways.
