Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PNV_Staph is a peptide-based vaccine candidate developed by Immunethep, a Portuguese biotechnology company, to prevent infections caused by *Staphylococcus aureus* (including methicillin-resistant *S. aureus* [MRSA] and vancomycin-resistant *S. aureus* [VRSA]) and *Staphylococcus epidermidis*. The vaccine targets the extracellular form of bacterial glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), a conserved virulence factor that bacteria use to suppress the host immune response. By eliciting antibodies that neutralize extracellular GAPDH without affecting human GAPDH, PNV_Staph restores the host's ability to identify and eliminate the bacteria. The vaccine consists of chemically synthesized peptides derived from bacterial GAPDH conjugated to a carrier protein and has completed preclinical development.
