Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Po Sum On Healing Balm is a traditional Chinese medicinal topical ointment developed by the PO Sum On Medicine Factory, a company established in Hong Kong in 1907. It is formulated with a blend of essential oils and herbal extracts, including peppermint oil, menthol, camphor, and cinnamon oil, set in a wax or petroleum base. The balm is primarily used for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with simple backache, arthritis, strains, bruises, and sprains. It is also applied to the chest to relieve discomfort from coughs and to the temples or skin to treat motion sickness and itching from insect bites. The mechanism of action involves the counter-irritant properties of its active ingredients, which stimulate sensory receptors (such as TRPM8 and TRPV1) in the skin to create cooling and warming sensations that modulate pain perception.
