Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Wartec is a topical antimitotic and cytotoxic formulation containing podophyllotoxin (also known as podofilox), a naturally occurring lignan extracted from the roots and rhizomes of *Podophyllum* plants. It is approved for the treatment of external condylomata acuminata (genital warts) affecting the penis or external female genitalia. Wartec works by binding to tubulin, thereby preventing microtubule assembly and arresting cell division in the metaphase. This local cytotoxic action leads to necrosis of the rapidly proliferating, virus-infected wart tissue. Originally developed by Stiefel Laboratories (which was acquired by GSK), the product is currently marketed and distributed in various regions by companies including Phoenix Laboratories.
