Podophyllum peltatum extract is a botanical extract derived from Podophyllum peltatum (commonly known as the American Mayapple or Wild Mandrake), a perennial herb native to eastern North America. The primary active ingredient in the extract is podophyllotoxin, a lignan compound that binds to tubulin, inhibiting microtubule assembly and arresting the cell cycle in metaphase. While the crude extract and its derivatives have been explored for antiviral and anticancer properties, podophyllotoxin itself was too toxic for systemic clinical use. However, it served as the precursor for the semi-synthetic FDA-approved chemotherapeutic agents etoposide, teniposide, and etopophos. Homeopathic preparations of Podophyllum peltatum (such as Podophyllum peltatum 200C) are also marketed for the treatment of recurrent loose motion and watery diarrhea, though these preparations have not been evaluated by the FDA for safety or efficacy.
